Understanding the KYC Process
KYC (Know Your Customer) is a one-time verification mandated by SEBI for all mutual fund investors in India. Here is everything you need to know.
What is Mutual Fund KYC?
KYC is a regulatory requirement under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and SEBI regulations. Every investor must complete KYC before making their first mutual fund investment. Once completed with any SEBI-registered intermediary, your KYC is valid across all mutual fund platforms in India -- you do not need to repeat it.
Your KYC records are maintained centrally by KYC Registration Agencies (KRAs) such as CAMS KRA, KFintech KRA, NSDL KRA, and CDSL Ventures. This means your verification status is portable and recognized by every AMC and distributor in the country.
Types of KYC Available
eKYC (Aadhaar OTP)
Fastest method. Uses Aadhaar OTP for identity verification. Investment limit of 50,000 per year per AMC until full KYC (CKYC) is completed. Best for getting started quickly.
CKYC (Full KYC)
Central KYC with no investment limits. Requires PAN, Aadhaar, photo, and signature. Done via Video KYC or in-person verification. Recommended for serious investors.
mKYC (Modified KYC)
For existing KYC holders who need to update details like address, contact, or bank information. Quick modification process without redoing full KYC.
Document Requirements
Keep the following documents ready before starting your KYC. All documents can be submitted digitally -- no physical copies required.
| Document | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| PAN Card | Identity and tax verification | Mandatory for all investors. Name must match bank records. |
| Aadhaar Card | Address and identity proof | Must be linked to your mobile number for OTP verification. |
| Passport Photo | Identity verification | Recent, clear photograph. Digital upload accepted. |
| Bank Proof | Bank account verification | Cancelled cheque or latest bank statement showing name, account number, and IFSC. |
| Signature | Verification and e-Sign | Digital signature via Aadhaar OTP for paperless processing. |
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: PAN Verification
Enter your PAN number. Our system instantly verifies it against the Income Tax database and auto-populates your name, date of birth, and other details. If your PAN is already KYC-verified with any KRA, we detect this automatically and you can skip to investing.
Step 2: Aadhaar OTP Verification
An OTP is sent to your Aadhaar-linked mobile number via UIDAI's secure API. This verifies your identity and address without requiring physical document submission. The OTP is valid for 10 minutes.
Step 3: Digital e-Sign
Your KYC application form is generated and presented for electronic signature using Aadhaar e-Sign. This is legally equivalent to a physical signature under the IT Act, 2000. No printing or courier required.
Step 4: KRA Registration
Your verified KYC data is submitted to the KRA (KYC Registration Agency). Once registered, your KYC status becomes "Verified" and is accessible to all SEBI-registered intermediaries. You can now invest in any mutual fund scheme across any platform.
